MPPI Breakfast Presentation
Held on November 21, 2003
The Academic Affairs & Professional Development
Committee of the MPPI is pleased to announce that a breakfast presentation
on ‘Big Boxes, Power Centres and the Evolving Retail
Landscape of Winnipeg’ was made by Brian Lorch,
Geography Professor of Lakehead University on Friday November
21, 2003 at The Fort Garry Hotel, 222 Broadway. Brian Lorch recently
completed a large research project on Suburban Shopping Nodes in
Winnipeg as a Visiting Scholar and Research Associate with the Institute
of Urban Studies, University of Winnipeg.
The breakfast seminar was a great professional development and
networking opportunity for those professionals involved with the
planning and development of commercial retail areas. Some of the
topics / issues discussed in the presentation dealt with:
- The geography of purchasing power in Winnipeg and how it relates
to the most recent wave of big box retail development.
- Are big boxes threatening the traditional hierarchy of planned
shopping centres?
- How does power centre design influence consumer spatial behaviour?
- Can retail development be “smartened up”?
It was a sold out event attended by over 70 planners.
