Sustainable
Development
The "sustainable development" discussion persists
despite the challenge to define the term. Some
persons advocate the identification and use of indicators
to achieve sustainable development. It has been
suggested that a psychological paradigm shift is required – with
a corresponding behavioural change. Others suggest
a multi-faceted approach is required that involves an
individual, systemic and technical response. Despite,
or perhaps, due to the continuing discussion, one intuitively
senses the need to pursue sustainability. Planners
play an important role in both the discussion and pursuit
of sustainability. Below are some links to web
sites that address various facets of sustainability. Appropriate
headings, for example, Climate Change, Housing, Energy,
and Transportation etc. should assist the user. Overlaps
exist across headings, reflecting the intrinsic interconnections
within which planners work. While not an exhaustive
list, the below web sites may provide invaluable information
to planners interested in incorporating sustainability
in their work. Please contact the MPPI should you want to recommend
another link be added to the list.
