Hazel Borys is President of PlaceMakers, LLC, a premiere New Urbanist design and planning firm with a distinctive edge. They not only translate the principles of Smart Growth planning into state-of-the-art design and coding, they make those principles accessible to a community of stakeholders who are more likely to support what they understand. They are leading educators in each phase of the process that takes proven ideas of Transect-based planning and design through idea-sorting and decision-making and into implementation. They help write the rules for community engagement and design through participation in the Congress for the New Urbanism and the National Charrette Institute.

Ken Reardon is the Director of the Graduate Program in City & Regional Planning at the University of Memphis. His research interests focus on community-based planning in severely distressed urban neighborhoods, alternative approaches to community development, urban social movements, and municipal government reform. Ken will be speaking on community-based planning at the Breakfast Seminar.

The Canadian Institute of Planners recently released a draft of their climate change policy and it expects planning professionals to take a proactive and leadership role in mitigating and adapting to climate change. Part of this policy expects planners to build resilience into communities.

The Manitoba Professional Planners Institute is offering a breakfast seminar with Lee Spencer, Director of Recovery, Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization who will explore how communities can adapt to be more resilient against potential disasters in the face of climate change.

MPPI Annual General Meeting
MPPI's AGM was held Thursday November 8th at the Hotel Fort Garry. Over 60 members were in attendance. The afternoon's program included a panel discussion, 'Responding to Changing Climates,' with discussants Jacquie East (City of Winnipeg), Eric Vogan (Urban Development Institute) and Dennis Cunningham (IISD). The discussion was moderated by Dave Witty (Dean, Faculty of Architecture, University of Manitoba). The panel was followed by two special guests presentations by Dr. Mark Seasons from the University of Waterloo and Andrea Gabor from Urban Strategies (Toronto).

At the AGM portion of the meeting, President Gerry Couture summarized the accomplishments of the past year.

The Manitoba Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council presents Trevor R. Dixon of Water Matrix, who will bring his experience in water consumption auditing and present the case for implementing water use reduction strategies in practical building solutions. Through case studies, Mr. Dixon will demonstrate how implementing these strategies in new and existing buildings not only reduces the wastewater load on municipal systems and the risk of raw sewage overflow into the environment, but also reduces energy spent heating and conditioning the water.12:00 Noon at the Dalnavert Museum (61 Carlton Street). The Manitoba Professional Planners Institute, with support from the department of City Planning at the University of Manitoba, presents a multimedia lecture/performance/rant on our city by Bruce Duggan, Associate Professor of Management at Providence College. Complementing the current CBC Radio Winnipeg ‘Urban Myths’ series and looking forward to the upcoming Mayor’s City Summit, Bruce will consider the questions: What is a city? What is this city? How do we make it better? His response will focus on a sensing of 'the operative myths’, as far as Winnipeg is concerned…the myths that all those concerned with city-making cannot afford to ignore if they wish their initiatives to meet with success.

MPPI Breakfast Presentation
Held on November 21, 2003

The Academic Affairs & Professional Development Committee of the MPPI is pleased to announce that a breakfast presentation on ‘Big Boxes, Power Centres and the Evolving Retail Landscape of Winnipeg’ was made by Brian Lorch, Geography Professor of Lakehead University on Friday November 21, 2003 at The Fort Garry Hotel, 222 Broadway. Brian Lorch recently completed a large research project on Suburban Shopping Nodes in Winnipeg as a Visiting Scholar and Research Associate with the Institute of Urban Studies, University of Winnipeg.

The breakfast seminar was a great professional development and networking opportunity for those professionals involved with the planning and development of commercial retail areas. Some of the topics / issues discussed in the presentation dealt with:

  • The geography of purchasing power in Winnipeg and how it relates to the most recent wave of big box retail development.
  • Are big boxes threatening the traditional hierarchy of planned shopping centres?
  • How does power centre design influence consumer spatial behaviour?
  • Can retail development be “smartened up”?

It was a sold out event attended by over 70 planners.

Smart Growth and Cities

The Manitoba Professional Planners Institute (MPPI) in partnership with the City of Winnipeg's Civic Environmental Committee and the University of Winnipeg's Institute of Urban Studies (IUS) hosted a session on Smart Growth titled "Smart Growth and Cities".

The speakers for this event included Dr. David Van Vliet of the University of Manitoba's Department of City Planning, and Mark McCullough, General Manager of the Canada Lands Company of Calgary.

Dr. Van Vliet is a professor in the Department of City Planning. His research interests include the principles and practices of sustainable community design, and documenting innovative projects that demonstrate these principles. David spoke on the concepts and theories of Smart Growth, and framed his presentation within the context of the Winnipeg Capital Region.

Mark McCullough has played a lead role in redeveloping Calgary's former Currie Air Force Barracks into a sustainable community known as "Garrison Woods". Mark discussed the major principles and objectives of the Garrison Woods development and addressed the challenges associated with implementing new standards of community design.
